SIMA (Surf Industry Manufacturers Association): Liquid Nation Ball

In 2008, the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) Humanitarian Fund proudly announced Dr. Dave Jenkins, CEO of SurfAid International, as Humanitarian of the Year. Dr. Dave was honored at Liquid Nation Ball 5, the official fundraiser for the SIMA Humanitarian Fund, on Friday, September 5, 2008.

Dr. Dave Jenkins was the first-ever SIMA Humanitarian of the Year to be honored by the SIMA Humanitarian Fund Board.

The annual Liquid Nation Ball serves as the main fundraising source for the SIMA Humanitarian Fund and has become one of the surf industry’s can’t miss events. Each September surf industry legends, surf stars, and La Jolla VIPs gather for an amazing night of dancing, live music, great food, open bar, and a short live auction of a unique collection of one-of-a-kind items to exclusively benefit the surf-related humanitarian organizations selected by the SIMA Humanitarian Fund Board of Directors.

Since 2003, Liquid Nation Ball has become one of the surf industry’s most anticipated fundraising events, benefiting 14 surf-related humanitarian organizations. The event is strategically placed on the second night of ASR September for the most influential figures, stars, and icons of the surf industry to attend. Read more about SurfAid and Liquid Nation.

Quiksilver: SurfAid International Launches Quiksilver SurfAid Community Health Training Centre

Humanitarian aid organization SurfAid International has opened the first stage of the Quiksilver SurfAid Community Health Training Centre at Katiet, in the Mentawai Islands, off Indonesia’s West Sumatran coast.

The centre, which has been funded by the Quiksilver Foundation, has been designed by leading organic agriculturalist, Brendan Hoare.

In the worst Mentawai villages, up to 50 per cent of children will die from causes including acute respiratory infection, diarrhea, bad or unclean birthing and malaria. Underlying this, SurfAid research shows that up to 40 per cent of Mentawai children are malnourished and 60 per cent of mothers and children are anemic. The centre aims to help correct this situation.

About the Katiet Village Project

The Katiet Village Project is about pioneering future community development projects.  Before these projects can then be rolled out to all SurfAid target villages they need to be tested and refined.  Katiet village will serve as a testing ground and in the future as a training center for village leaders from around the islands.
