Schools Program

Goal
To provide students the opportunity to examine important global issues, raising their social awareness and encouraging them to become better global citizens while learning about life in the Mentawai Islands.

Timeline
July 2007 to June 2012

Objectives:

  • To provide an exciting learning opportunity
  • To educate students about the geography, economy and culture of the Mentawai Island region, located off West Sumatra, Indonesia, and the health and wellbeing of its people
  • To encourage the development of global citizenship and social responsibility along with an understanding of how we, as individuals, can make a difference in our world
  • To offer information about the importance of health, hygiene and education
  • To encourage participation in sport and group activities while raising funds to help improve the health of the Mentawai people


About the Schools Program

The SurfAid International Schools Program, supported by Billabong, is a five-year global educational program available for free online to teachers and students in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the United States. The program provides an opportunity for students to learn about the geography, economy, culture, health and living conditions of the 70,000 people of the Mentawai Island region, off the coast of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The Schools Program is a collaboration between SurfAid International, Billabong, the education sector, students, parents and teachers.
